THE ARTIST

Justine Acerden, also known as PXSHBXL, is a Filipino artist based in Naarm, Australia. Her preferred medium is pen and ink, through which she expresses her distinctive, rustic style. Drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources—emotions, thoughts, experiences, and the essence of people—she strives to capture the intricate complexities of human dramas in her visual narratives. Influenced by Japanese manga, her art is marked by the boldness and intricacy of pen and ink to illustrate the complexity of human emotions and experiences in her artwork.

Her journey into art began at a very young age when her passion for sketching and creation blossomed naturally. After graduating with a degree in architecture, she worked as an architect in the Philippines and later gained over a decade of experience in interior design in Singapore. Despite the demands of her professional career, she has always made time for art, drawing from her design background to fuel creativity.

Since moving to Naarm, she has found inspiration in the city's charming, vibrant energy and creative atmosphere. She is exploring new dimensions in her art, blending her passion for creativity with her professional skills. She enjoys experimenting with new techniques and mediums, constantly pushing the boundaries of her craft and expanding her artistic horizons.

THE PSEUDONYM

During her time at university, while pursuing a degree in architecture, Justine was a creative contributor for the university publication, The Lathe. She used the pseudonym Pishbol, which has since evolved to PXSHBXL, to represent her roots and heritage in the Philippines. The name originates from "fishball," one of the country's famous street foods, reflecting a playful yet meaningful connection. Pishbol is a clever Taglish pronunciation of the English word "fishball," embodying a fusion of cultural identity and artistic expression.
